The State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang earlier this week presented a statement on the Rwenzori Marathon which will take place on 22nd August 2026 in Kasese.

He said this event has grown into one of the most visible sporting occasions on the national calendar, and this year’s edition will bring together participants drawn from close to 45 countries Globally.

“The Rwenzori Marathon is more than a race. It is a platform for talent identification, a showcase for our tourism, and an opportunity for enterprise in the Rwenzori region and beyond. The government has committed Shs3.7bn towards this year’s Rwenzori Marathon. This contribution is directed principally at the prize purse for participants, which is central to attracting and rewarding competitive fields,” Hon. Peter Ogwang said.

Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa has recognised the selfless contribution of Amos Wekesa (Proprietor of Rwenzori Marathon), a conservationist and tourism enthusiast towards the promotion of tourism sector, and urged government to partner more with him.

“Having such a patriotic Ugandan needs to be appreciated..Why not partner with him as well to have the Kampala Marathon?,” Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa said.

State Minister for Tourism, Hon. Suzan Nakawuki said the Rwenzori Marathon is not just a race, but an avenue for opportunities.

“There is going to be an economic boom in Kasese. Right now we are grappling with issues of accommodation because of the big numbers,” she said.

In a bid to promote the Rwenzori Marathon in the future, Hon. Sowedi Kitanywa (Busongora North MP) urged government to prioritise the tarmacking of tourism roads in Kasese for smoother races.

Hon. Ferigo Kambale (Kasese Municipality) has urged the public to embrace the Rwenzori Marathon because it is one of the few World label marathons which has marketed Uganda globally.
