Uganda’s representative at the Miss Tourism Africa pageant, Alison Mary Akello, has secured the 2nd Runner-up position at the prestigious event held on Monday, October 1, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria. Akello, a former Miss Tourism Uganda (Teso region), was among the top five contestants out of 20 participants from across Africa, showcasing Uganda’s beauty and talent on the continental stage.
In August, Akello handed over her crown to the new Miss Tourism Teso, Betty Acam Okello, before being selected to represent Uganda at the Miss Tourism Africa grand finale.
As of September 30, Uganda led the Miss Popularity contest with 465 votes, followed by Namibia (382), Mauritius (368), Chad (321), Mozambique (100), Kenya (53), Nigeria (42), Côte d’Ivoire (30), and Ghana with just one vote. Akello dominated the Miss Popularity online voting, positioning her at the top during the boot camp as fans eagerly awaited the final results.
Reflecting on the journey, Akello expressed her gratitude and hopes for bringing the crown home, saying, “I want to call upon my people in Uganda. This is the only opportunity we have, and I want us to pray to God for this crown to come home. I appreciate the fact that many Ugandans have stood with me in voting and promoting me online. Let’s continue voting.”
Busingye, one of Akello’s supporters, encouraged Ugandans to continue voting online to boost her chances of winning.
The grand finale was also attended by Uganda’s Mr. Tourism Africa representative, Bernard Nabaasa. The winner of the Miss Tourism Africa crown will receive $2,000 (approximately UGX 7.3 million), along with a trip to the Maldives and Milan for Fashion Week.
Despite the tough competition, Akello’s performance has made Uganda proud.
