The deadline for the phase-out of outdated Yaka payment meters has been set by Minister Ruth Nankabirwa of the Ministry of Energy.

In a recent announcement, Minister Nankabirwa stated that the Yaka meters will cease to function by November 24th, 2024.

She assured the public that power suppliers are working diligently to ensure a smooth transition during the system upgrade.

Additionally, Minister Nankabirwa disclosed that the electricity tariff has been reduced to promote competitiveness in the manufacturing sector.

The government plans to adopt the Standard Transfer Specification as the new technology for prepaid electric metering, allowing consumers to switch electricity payments between utility providers.

As part of this transition, the government intends to introduce electricity tokens from various operators, replacing the current Yaka system provided by Umeme Uganda Limited.
